The anime in some sense is more direct because it doesn't have all the minor characters, and of course if you skip one or two for the first 20 episodes you're not really missing much (especially the "fillers"). I would recommend you watch the anime too, it's really good.i watched the anime and then read the manga. i agree with Snazzle in both the anime and manga usually all the action starts when mukuro arrives, which is like volume 8 (around chapter 61) or episode 20. Yes i know it's major problem is the fact the beginning is kinda lame.(i watched the anime first and the first 20 episodes were funny but kinda stupid).but you should really continue it because it is in depth a really really good anime and manga.
